OBESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER

Introduction:

Well organized and systemic person is the result of a disciplined life. Not liking the mess around and being surrounded by clean environment is a wish of a normal person. But getting anxious on some para normal cleaning and organizing factors is an issue which we will discuss here in this topic. 

Definition:

As per DSM Classification OCD is defined as recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges or images that are experienced, at some time during the disturbance, as intrusive, unwanted, and that in most individuals cause marked anxiety or distress.

OCD comprises of Obsession and Compulsion 

●Obsession: A recurrent, persistent thought, image, or impulse that is unwanted and distressing and comes involuntarily to mind despite attempts to ignore or suppress it.

● Compulsion: Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that a person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession. The behaviors typically prevent or reduce a person's distress related to an obsession.

OCD Cycle: 


Risk Factors  and etiology:

● Unsatisfied parent child relationship.

● Genetics.

● Family History.

●Neurotransmitter disorders.

Sign and symptoms:

Obession symptoms;

●Fear of being contaminated by touching objects others have touched.

●Doubts that you've locked the door or turned off the stove.

●Intense stress when objects aren't orderly or facing a certain way.

●Images of driving your car into a crowd of people.

●Thoughts about shouting obscenities or acting inappropriately in public.

●Unpleasant sexual images.

●Avoidance of situations that can trigger obsessions, such as shaking hands.

Compulsive symptoms 

●Hand-washing until your skin becomes raw.

●Checking doors repeatedly to make sure they're locked.

●Checking the stove repeatedly to make sure it's off.

●Counting in certain patterns.

●Silently repeating a prayer, word or phrase.

●Arranging your canned goods to face the same way.

Types of OCD: 

●Organization.

●Contamination.

●Intrusive thoughts.

●Rumination.

Diagonsis: 

There is no typical test for OCD. 

DSM V criteria gave the class of symptoms of OCD and health care provider use it for the diagonsis. 

Management:

There are two management for OCD.

● Medication.

●Psychological therapy. 

Medication; 

●Antidepressants 

 》Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Psychological therapy;

》cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

Those who have mild OCD can only work through therapies but in severe cases medication and therapy both are important.
